Increasingly, funders and the general public want to know if their grants and donations are making a true difference. Not-for-profits themselves also want to find out whether the strategies they are pursuing to meet social need are indeed the most effective ones. (Not all organisations do seem to want to know, but that is for another post.) There are many different ways to attempt to measure social impact; there is no one easy answer. Those of us involved in evaluating the work that not-for-profits do are always trying to find new approaches and techniques. I was pleased, therefore, to hear of the launch of the Social Impact Analysts Association, which hopes to attract an international membership, and "encourage dialogue about different approaches and methodologies in surveying and reporting on the impact of not-for-profit organisations around the world". I shall make it my business to keep up to date on its development.
